2023 - May - Motorsport

Hi All, by the time you are reading this, round 3 of this years championship will have been run and won. It is shaping up to be a good day with 36 entered at time of writing. Excellent to see 6 x WRX members have entered, it will be very interesting to see how these little weapons perform. We need some more genuine HSV runners out there to show the old dinosaurs are still up to the challenge.

There will be plenty of Associate members there to fly the v8 flag but we really need to see you Full Members out there. As you know, we have set in place a rookie class which caters for first timers and also genuine street cars that don’t necessarily want to set a lap time as such but just want to go out and have some unrestricted fun.

This is what gets lost sometimes with the Motorsport side of the club. In the rush to go as fast as you can lap time-wise, you forget to just enjoy the ride and the thrill of holding that throttle flat to the floor without the worry of a Police Camera hiding in the bushes.

If you have a genuine HSV and are worried about beating up on it – DON’T – they are built to take it but besides that, you are under no obligation to go ten tenths flat out. You can go as fast as you like, all the groupings are based on time so you will not be out there with the fast guys anyway. Come out, have some fun with your toy and drive it home again, that’s got to be better than leaving it sitting in the shed doing nothing or going on a slow cruise along the coast, although that is fun as well, but c’mon, you can’t bury the foot along West Coast can you!!!

The next motorsport event, which is in July, is a WRX club run event at the Midvale Speed dome. Details are available on the website, but this is basically a low speed driving/memory test to see if you can remember the course and test the handling of the car and driver. It will be fun to see how some of our faster guys handle the tight confines of the Speed dome carpark. Come along even if it is to spectate, this will most likely be back on the calendar next year.

August event will be another change in pace with a WRX club Jack’s Hillclimb day which is at Wanneroo Raceway for those that don’t know. Details will be posted soon so keep an eye out for this one. Its another low speed challenge but it is a tricky course as well so a good memory will also be needed for this one.

Results are, as always, elsewhere in this edition with updated championship points table as well. You can always access these on the club website at anytime.

Finally its great to see more HSV club members taking it to the next level and heading to the Bathurst Challenge this year, Good luck to Lib & Sue Palermo and Keith Hawley, you will not regret the huge effort in getting over there. You want stop talking about it, much like me.

See you at the track

Cheers

Mike Clynk
